California Real ID travel requirements begin in May 2025. How to renew your state driver’s license online, apply online, make an appointment and avoid lines.

The California DMV plans to open up 18 offices across the state an hour earlier than usual on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for the next several weeks.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced that 40 of its locations around the state will offer limited service on Saturday beginning in June.

The DMV stressed that customers without appointments will wait longer. It is recommended people make an appointment before their local DMV field office visit.

Others are going online to make appointments and finding out the next available spot is weeks away. “I applied for the appointment online on May 15.

After months of complaints, the DMV has dumped the knowledge test and online training course for most drivers 70 and older who are renewing their licenses.
