A group formed by Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and TomTom is releasing data that could enable developers to build their own maps.

Microsoft is giving search competitor Google a run for its money with the launch of its new Bing Maps Beta, a map application that features enhanced bird's eye and streetside viewing.

Overture Maps was originally announced in late 2022, with Google’s biggest competitors on board. Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, TomTom and more mapping specialists have teamed up to create the project.

Apple allows its native OS developers free access to its Apple Maps service, but web app developers, for example, have to pay. Google developers pay a fee per thousand Google Maps lookups.
